Recognizing the need to provide the town of Fairfield in Connecticut with quality education that is affordable, Walter W. Curtis, the Bishop of the Diocese of Bridgeport, established Sacred Heart University in 1963. A Roman Catholic university with a suburban setting, Sacred Heart covers 67 acres. It is notable for being the first Catholic university in the United States staffed by people who are not members of the clergy. In the New England region, only Boston College is a bigger Catholic university.
Sacred Heart accommodates about 6,000 students, and it has more than 500 full-time adjunct and full-time professors. The university consists of five colleges. They are the College of Arts & Sciences, John F. Welch College of Business, College of Health Professions, Isabelle Farrington College of Education and University College. In addition to the main campus at Fairfield, the school has four regional campuses in the state and two satellite campuses in Luxembourg and Italy.
Featured Programs
At Sacred Heart, students can choose from more than 40 undergraduate, master’s and doctorate degrees. Its online degree programs are mainly concentrated at its College of Health Professions. RNs who already have their BSN can go for the RN to Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) to get their master’s degree. There’s also the traditional MSN program, and the Master of Science in Applied Psychology.
