By signing Council Bill No. 20, Governor Edward Stevenson established the University of Idaho in 1889. After four years of development, the school finally opened its doors in 1893 on the site of a former uranium mine. Its proposal signed in April of 1911, the charter for Southern Methodist University was established at the Annual Conferences of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. Thomas Jefferson, while President of the United States, wrote to his friend, artist Charles Wilson Peal expressing his desire to found a university that would be “extensive and liberal” at a scale that had never been seen before in the United States. The University of the Territory of Wisconsin was incorporated by the Wisconsin Territorial Legislature in 1838.
