With the motto “People Creating Possibilities”, Nicholls State University originally opened its doors as Francis T. Nicholls Junior College of Louisiana State University. Established in 1967, Louisiana State University Shreveport started out as a two-year commuter college. Called for over thirty years prior, the people of Shreveport had petitioned Lousiana State University to create an extension campus in Shreveport since 1936. Established in 1884, Northwestern State University of Louisiana is a public university located in Natchitoches, Lousiana. With the motto “Dedicated to one goal. Yours.”, Northwestern State University of Louisana was originally known as the Louisiana State Normal School. At this time, the Louisiana State Normal School had the one goal of training teachers who would then go on to work in the public education system within the state of Lousiana. Located in Monroe, Louisiana, the University of Louisiana at Monroe is a public university and member of the University of Louisiana System. Established in 1931, the University of Louisiana at Monroe opened its doors as the Ouachita Parish Junior College. Offering only two-year degree programs at first, the school was soon renamed to the Northeast Center of Lousiana State University just three years after its opening. Still providing much of the same curriculum as it did when it opened, the school was renamed once again to Northeast Junior College of Louisiana State University in 1949. A public research university, Southern University, and A&M College is historically black university located in Baton Rouge, Lousiana. Founded in 1879, Southern University and A&M College were originally created in order to provide an institution of higher learning for black students who lived in the Baton Rouge-area. Originally located in New Orleans, Southern University and A&M College were originally named Southern College. In 1890, the school received funding through the Morrill Land-Grant Act which was then used to establish the Agricultural and Mechanical department at the school. Established in 1894, Louisiana Tech University is a public research university. Located in Ruston, Louisiana, Louisiana Tech University was originally established as the Industrial Institute and College of Louisiana. However, prior to its original charter, Louisiana Tech University’s history dates even further back to the 1880s. At this time, Ruston College was operating in the town of Ruston. After this school folded, the people of Ruston called for the creation of an industrial school that would serve the area. In 1894, the Louisiana legislature called for the creation of The Industrial Institute and College of Louisiana. In 1898, The Industrial Institute and College of Louisiana underwent restructuring which led to the school being renamed once again to the Louisiana Industrial Institute. Established in 1956, University of New Orleans is a public research university located in New Orleans, Louisiana. Originally founded as Louisiana State University in New Orleans, University of New Orleans was founded as part of the Louisiana State University System. At the time of its founding, New Orleans had yet received its own public university to serve its city. One of the largest metropolitan areas in the entire United States without a public university, the people of New Orleans began plans to start construction on the new school. Founded with the motto “Excellence With A Personal Touch”, McNeese State University is a public university. Located in Lake Charles, Louisiana, McNeese State University was established in 1939. Originally a division of Louisiana State University, McNeese State University was originally named Lake Charles Junior College. Only offering students two-year degree programs, in the beginning, the Lake Charles Junior College soon grew to add additional academic programs. In 1940, it was decided that the school was to be renamed from Lake Charles Junior College to John McNeese Junior College. This name was selected in order to honor the legacy of John McNeese, the school’s first superintendent. Ten years later, the school became independent of Louisiana State University and was free to create its own curriculum.
