Located in New Haven, Connecticut, Albertus Magnus College was started by a group known as the Dominican Sisters of St. Mary of the Springs. The school was named after St. Albertus Magnus, who was a scholar and philosopher during Medieval times. The vision for the school was to create an institution of higher learning that catered to students who were Roman Catholic. From the very outset, Albertus Magnus College was thriving. With the motto “He who transplants, sustains”, Quinnipiac University is a private university. Established in 1929, Quinnipiac University is located in Hamden, Connecticut. Founded by Samuel W. Tator, Quinnipiac University was initially known as the Connecticut College of Commerce. Wanting to fill the void left by Northeastern University’s cancellation of its New Haven program, Samuel W. Tator quickly worked to replace the school. In the beginning, the Connecticut College of Commerce offered only associate’s degrees. However, the Connecticut College of Commerce soon expanded its academic offerings and changed its name in 1935. Then known as the Junior College of Commerce, the school briefly shut down during World War II. After the end of the war, the Junior College of Commerce reopened to its highest enrollment numbers up to that point. Renamed to Quinnipiac College in 1951, the new name was chosen in order to honor the Quinnipiac Native American tribe that once lived in New Haven. A public university, Eastern Connecticut State University is located in Willimantic, Connecticut. Established in 1889, Eastern Connecticut State University was originally known as the Willimantic State Normal School. At the time of its establishment, the Willimantic State Normal School’s primary function was to act as a training facility for teachers. Hoping to bolster the public education system in the state of Connecticut, the Connecticut General Assembly worked to ensure that normal schools such as the one at Willimantic were operating. A year after its founding, construction on a new campus for the Willimantic State Normal School had begun and was completed five years later. Over the course of the next thirty years, Willimantic State Normal School continued to grow until it was renamed to Willimantic State Teachers College in 1937. Around this time, West Hartford, Connecticut, was home to the Hartford Art School, Hillyer College, and The Hartt School. Originally founded by Most Reverend Walter W. Founded on the motto “A Leader in Experiential Education”, the University of New Haven was first established in 1920. Located in West Haven, Connecticut, the University of New Haven began its history as part of the local YMCA. Originally known as the New Haven YMCA Junior College, the school was also established as part of the nearby Northeastern University. Six years after its founding, the school was rechartered as New Haven College. New Haven College continued to operate from its location at Northeastern University for nearly forty years. Officially established in 1932, the University of Saint Joseph was one of the first liberal arts colleges for women in all of Hartford. Leading up to the school’s founding, the Sisters of Mercy of Connecticut, a local Catholic organization, began plans to create a school that would serve the local women. The idea was to create an institution of higher learning that empowered women with the opportunity to not only gain an education but learn valuable professional skills as well.
