#6. Colorado State University
Signed into existence in 1870 by Edward M. McCook, governor of the then Colorado Territory, Colorado State University existed only on paper for its first year. Fisher College was established to provide students vocational preparation. Founded in 1903, Fisher College was started by Myron C. Fisher and Edmund H. Fisher. Anderson University’s earliest history dates back to the Johnson Female Seminary, an all-women’s school formed in 1848. Thomas and William Curtis, father and son, opened Limestone College in 1845. Two scholars from England, Thomas and William Curtis wanted to provide an opportunity for women to gain a higher education. In 1822, Athens State University was founded as the Athens Female Academy. Serving a student population of just women, the Athens Female Academy operated until 1842. On a plot of land designated by the state to be made into a school, Southwest Kansas Conference College was established in 1884. The plot of land remained dormant for another year while funding issues and discussions about the size of the plot were underway. Finally, in 1885 construction began on the Southwestern Kansas Conference College. After a year of construction, Southwest Kansas Conference College was opened to students in 1886. After operating under the name Southwest Kansas Conference College for almost two decades, it was decided that the name would be shortened to Southwestern College in 1909. Currently, Southwestern College is a technology-forward campus. All students enrolled on campus are issued a laptop upon their enrollment at the college. #40. Brenau University
Started as a women’s seminary, Brenau University was founded in 1878. The school began to resemble the Brenau University of today in 1900 when it was purchased by H. J. Pearce. Upon it’s purchase, Pearce renamed the school to Brenau College. “Brenau’ is a combination of the German word brennen which means “to burn” and the Latin word aurum which means “gold”. This name coincides with the school’s motto which is “As Gold Refined by Fire”. Privately owned by Pearce until 1911, the school’s ownership was transferred to a board of trustees that continue to operate this school to this day. Brenau College eventually added evening and weekend classes in the 1960s which were a precursor to the school’s distance education system. In 1992, the Board of Trustees at Brenau College voted to rename the school to Brenau University to reflect the breadth of programs at the school. Located in Gainesville, Georgia, Brenau University enrolls over 3,500 students. Brenau University is a private institution.
