Located in Houghton, Michigan Technological University is a public research university. Founded with the motto “Create the Future”, Michigan Technological University was founded in 1885. Originally known as the Michigan Mining School, Michigan Technological University has always had its history firmly rooted in technology and engineering. Originally focusing on only mining technology, the school quickly grew to be known for more than that. In 1897, the school was renamed to the Michigan College of Mines and then updated to the Michigan College of Mining and Technology. This name change was made in order to better reflect the added range of courses made available at the institution. As mining became less and less relevant to the identity of the school, it was decided that the school was to be renamed once more. In 1957, the school was renamed to Michigan Technological University. This name change also allowed Michigan Technological University to maintain its already established nickname, “Michigan Tech”. Today, Michigan Technological University is home of the Huskies, a student body that tops out at over 7,000 students.

#20. Michigan State University
Established in 1855, Michigan State University is a public research university. Created under the Morrill Act, Michigan State University was originally founded as the Agricultural College of the State of Michigan. Answering the call for the creation of agricultural schools across the state, the Agricultural College of the State of Michigan began to educate students from across the state in the science of agriculture. In 1861, Michigan passed legislation that gave the school a new four-year curriculum and the ability to grant Master’s degrees. With this change, the school was renamed from the Agricultural College of the State of Michigan to the State Agricultural College. Nine years later, the State Agricultural College began to admit women making the school coeducational. Renamed to Michigan Agricultural College in 1909, the school entered the 20th century with a strong reputation. As the school began to add more programs to its curriculum the school was renamed to the Michigan State College of Agriculture and Applied Science. It wasn’t until 1964 that that school was officially renamed to Michigan State University. Today, Michigan State University enrolls a student body of over 50,000 students.
