An evangelical university, Oklahoma Wesleyan University was first established in 1959. Located in Bartlesville, Oklahoma, Oklahoma Wesleyan University was formed out of the merger of a few different bible schools located in the area. Originally known as Bartlesville Wesleyan College, the school was formed out of the merger of Colorado Springs Bible College, Pilgrim Bible College, and Western Pilgrim College. The earliest of these three schools was established in 1910 helping extend the school’s roots almost fifty years further into the past. After this merger, Bartlesville Wesleyan College was established on a plot of land in Bartlesville. Keeping the Colorado Springs Bible College name for the first ten years of operation, the school was renamed to Bartlesville Wesleyan College after the Wesleyan Methodist Church and the Pilgrim Holiness Church had merged together. In 1972, the nearby Miltonvale Wesleyan College was absorbed into the Bartlesville Wesleyan College. Officially founded in 1899, Southern Nazarene University is the product of a series of mergers of different academic institutions located in the state. In 1899, the Texas Holiness University was founded and began to offer students an opportunity for a higher education with a Christian perspective. This institution is the oldest part of Southern Nazarene University. In 1906, the Beaulah Heights Academy and Bible School was opened in Oklahoma City. Founded in 1965, Oral Roberts University is a Christian university located in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Established by an Evangelist minister named Oral Roberts, was conceived from a vision given to Oral Roberts by God. Breaking ground on the new school in 1962, the school began enrolling its first class of students in 1965. Originally known as the Southwestern Normal School, Southwestern Oklahoma State University was first established in 1901. Located in Weatherford, Oklahoma, Southwestern Oklahoma State University was founded by the Oklahoma Territorial Legislature. Predating Oklahoma’s statehood, the Southwestern Normal School was established in order to train teachers who would then go on to work within the soon-to-be state’s system of public education. Operating in this capacity for nearly twenty years, the school was renamed in 1921 to Southwestern State Teachers College after implementing its first four-year Bachelor’s degree program. Entering into a rocky period during the Great Depression, Southwestern State Teachers College managed to stay afloat despite threats of closure due to financial hardship. Surviving this period, Southwestern State Teachers College added vocational training to its curriculum in 1939 which helped fuel a resurgence in enrollment. Following the end of World War II, Southwestern State Teachers College expanded its curriculum to include a variety of different academic programs. This led to some name changes including Southwestern State College of Diversified Occupations and the Southwestern Institute of Technology. Located in Bethany, Oklahoma, Southwestern Christian University is one of Oklahoma’s premier Christian universities. Originally established in 1946, Southwestern Christian University was originally known as the Southwestern Bible College. The first Pentecostal institution of education in the entire state of Oklahoma, the Southwestern Bible College was founded as a training facility for future leaders of the church. Students at the Southwestern Bible College would be taught the skills needed in order to work in the ministry at the Intercoastal Holiness Church. Operating this way for nearly twenty years, Southwestern Bible College began to experiment with the addition of junior college level programming into its curriculum during the 1960s. This change in academic programming led to a surge in enrollment which prompted the Southwestern Bible College to continue to pursue additional academic programming. This led to the school being renamed to the Oklahoma City Southwestern College. In the 1980s, the school underwent a period of refocusing which resulted in the school being renamed back to Southwestern Bible College and then to Southwestern College of Christian Ministries. A public university, Northeastern State University was first established in 1909. Located in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, Northeastern State University’s history dates back even further than its date of establishment. In 1851, the Cherokee Nation established the Cherokee National Female Seminary in Tahlequah. At the same time, the Cherokee Nation also opened a separate Male Seminary. This school was soon relocated to Indian Territory after Oklahoma received its statehood. However, the facilities remained. In 1900, the State of Oklahoma established the Northeastern State Normal School and decided to purchase the Cherokee National Female Seminary’s facilities from the Cherokee Nation. Providing teacher training to students who would then go on to work in Oklahoma’s public education system, the school was later renamed to Northeastern State Teachers College in 1921. With this name change also came the addition of four-year degree programs to the school’s curriculum. This expansion attracted more students to the school which fueled further expansion of the school’s academic offerings. Located in Lawton, Oklahoma, Cameron University is one of Oklahoma’s public universities. Established in 1908, Cameron University was created as one of state’s six original agricultural high schools. Known as the Cameron State School of Agriculture, the school provided young students with an agricultural education. By 1927, the Cameron State School of Agriculture had added junior college-level courses to its curriculum. This resulted in a name change to Cameron State Agricultural College. Dropping the high school classes from the curriculum, Cameron State Agricultural College set its sights on expanding its college offerings. Located in Edmond, Oklahoma, the University of Central Oklahoma is a public university and member of the Regional University System of Oklahoma. Established in 1890, the University of Central Oklahoma is currently the third-largest university in all of Oklahoma. Founded as the Territorial Normal School, the University of Central Oklahoma also earns the distinction of being the oldest public institution of higher education in the state.
